Obedience Training

Wilson Veterinary Hospital offers an 8-week obedience course for dog owners that teaches all of the basic obedience commands: sit, stay, down, stand, heeling, and come. It is taught by Jennifer Scott who has attended one of Jack Volhard’s Training Camps in Connecticut. The 8-week program costs $115 and includes a training collar, a lease and the book by Jack Volhard, What All Good Dogs Should Know. Pets and their owners are given specific instructions for homework every week.

Jennifer Scott

I started working at Wilson Veterinary Hospital in 2000. I have always had a love for animals especially dogs and my life long dream, from childhood, was to work at the vet with "Dr. Batten". I would always accompany my dad to Wilson Veterinary Hospital where we took our dogs. I was so impressed with the care given to our animals.

In 2001, Dr. Frank Batten approached me and asked if I would be interested in starting Dog Obedience classes at the vet. I was honored that Dr. Batten had chosen me to do that, for a childhood dream of mine was to be a dog trainer, although Dr. Batten did not know that at the time. So in 2002, I was sent to Connecticut to one of Jack Volhard's Training Camps. What a wonderful experience!! I met so many people there who loved dogs as much as I did. Not only that, but there main goal was to show you how to communicate with the dogs and how to make them "good canine citizens".

Jack and Wendy Volhard are very intelligent and compassionate people. They have done so much research into the "how and why" about dogs. They have written many books about dogs and dog training. Their "Motivational Method" is what I use to teach my class by. It is a tried and true method. Jack Volhard put this together himself in 1973. The training methods used makes it very easy for the owner and the dog.

In Connecticut, I worked with Mary Ann Zeigenfuse, a Volhard trainer in Kentucky with over 25 years of experience. Her most famous student was Millie Bush. She has written several books on dog training, as well.

My favorite thing about being a Dog Obedience Instructor is seeing the "before and after". Most everyone calls me frantic a couple of weeks before the class starts, saying, "help me!"  The first night of class the dogs are very unsure of themselves and the owners are very frustrated, but by the very next week, wow, what a difference!! I have not seen anyone who did their homework every week not have success with this training method. It is so wonderful to see even the most high-spirited dog listen to their owner and do what is asked of him.

My goal as a Dog Obedience Instructor is to improve the relationship between the dog and their owner. I want their bond to be life long. A heartbreaking thing for me to witness is someone giving their dog away just because they can't "handle him". That's where I hope to help everyone I encounter have a good relationship with their dog and to help the dog be a "good canine citizen".
